OPEN REDUCTION INTERNAL FIXATION ANKLE

Please follow these simple instructions:

ICE: The use of ice following surgery decreases pain and swelling. Apply the ice in a well sealed bag directly over the cast. There is no need to time your application of ice, simply keep the ankle cold, replacing ice bags when they melt.
ELEVATE: Elevation helps control swelling. Elevate your leg, above the level of your chest. Use several pillows to prop your leg in this elevated position, such that your toes are higher than your knee, and your knee is higher than your hip. Wiggle your toes.
PAIN CONTROL: You have received prescriptions for pain medication. If you have not done so already, have them filled by your pharmacy. Please refer to the handout regarding pain medication, and use as directed.
BATHING: In order to bathe, place a plastic cover over your cast to keep it from getting wet. Keep the cast elevated out the side of your bathtub. If the cast accidentally gets a little bit wet, it can be dried with a hairdryer on the cold setting. If the cast gets very wet, you must call the office to arrange for a cast change. Please try to avoid this. Most importantly, be careful, bathtubs are slippery.
AMBULATION: You must you your crutches or walker for ambulation. You are not to apply any weight to the affected side, only gently touching toes to the floor for balance. Do not begin applying any weight to your leg until released to do so by your clinician.
