FOOT AND ANKLE SURGERY

Post-Operative Instructions:

* You have just had a surgical procedure, a moderate amount of swelling and discomfort can be expected.

* The involved foot and leg must be elevated higher than the level of your heart. Place pillows beneath your knee, leg, and foot, even while sleeping. Do not let your involved foot hang down for longer than a few minutes. This may increase your pain and swelling.

* An ice bag should be used for 5 days following your procedure. Place the ice bag on your foot near the area of surgery for approximately 30 minutes. Repeat this process several times per day. Use the ice bag only while awake. Make sure the ice bag does not leak.

* Do not get the bandage or cast wet. This may increase the chance for infection, please contact our office if this happens.

* Do not remove the surgical bandage. The ace wrap may be removed and reapplied if it feels too restrictive.

* If you notice that your bandage is soaked with blood, please contact our office.

* Take the prescribed medications as indicated. Pain medication should only be used if necessary, remember to take this medication with food.

* Rest and limit your standing and walking. Do not place weight on your foot unless instructed to do so. The surgical shoe must remain on your foot whenever you are in an upright position. Only remove the surgical shoe while sleeping if instructed to do so.

* Check your temperature daily, if it is greater than 101 degrees, please contact our office.

* Call our office for an appointment.

* If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact our office.
