ANKLE ARTHROSCOPY

Please follow these simple instructions:

ICE: The use of ice following surgery decreases pain and swelling. Apply the ice in a well-sealed bag directly over the ankle. There is no need to time your application of ice, simply keep the knee cold, replacing ice bags when they melt.

ELEVATE: Elevation helps control swelling. Elevate your leg, above the level of your chest. Use several pillows to prop your leg position, such that your toes are higher than your knee, and your knee is higher than your hip. Wiggle your toes.

PAIN CONTROL: You have received prescriptions for pain medication. If you have not done so already, have them filled by your pharmacy. Please refer to the handout regarding pain medication, and use as directed.

BATHING: In order to bathe, place a plastic bag over your leg to keep it from getting wet. You may shower normally after 48 hours, washing the wounds with a mild soap. Do not soak in the bathtub or hot tub until the wounds are completely healed and your clinician has removed the sutures. Most importantly, be careful, bathtubs are slippery when wet, don’t fall.

AMBULATION: You may need to use your crutches or walker for ambulation for several days. You may apply weight to the leg as tolerated. You may discontinue the use of crutches when you are able to walk without a limp. If you are unsure, discuss this with your clinician or physical therapist.
