Nutrition after surgery

You may get a little nauseated after your surgery. Sometimes the medications you are on or just the stress of having surgery can make you feel this way. Your body will tell you what and when to eat. We will give you juice or soda and crackers in the recovery area. We would like you to be able to drink something before we let you leave.

Start off Slowly

Liquids and soups are easiest on your stomach.
If you feel up to it, you can progress to semi-solids; Things like mashed potatoes and applesauce.
Slowly move to solid foods
Try to avoid fatty, rich or spicy foods on your first day post-op.
Eat smaller amounts, more often or as tolerated.

Drink Fluids

• Keeping your body hydrated after surgery helps make you feel better by balancing the electrolytes in your body
• Unless otherwise indicated, drink at least 6 glasses of clear liquids a day.
• Avoid alcoholic beverages your first day, and until your doctor tells you that you can have alcohol.

Good Nutrition

• Good nutrition helps you heal quicker.
• Eat a low-fat moderate protein diet.
• High protein cereal, like Raisin Bran, fish and chicken help repair skin, muscle and bone affected by surgery.
